Who does this?
A Bible reader is confident to speak in front of a crowd; a clear speaker, able to engage people and direct them to focus.
At its heart, a Bible reader is a clear reader who understands the passage; nothing less, and nothing more.
Brief Description
Being a Bible reader involves:
Preparing before the service, by praying, and reading (aloud) the chosen passage
Preparing by identifying difficult or unusual words or names, so their pronunciation on the day does not distract the listener.
Preparing on the day by warming up the voice/mouth… singing aloud during the hymns is one of the best ways.
Being at the lecturn ready to speak as soon as the music or previous item ends, so as to minimize down time.
Giving the briefest introduction. This means identifying the chapter, starting verse, and page number. It might at times mean reading a heading, such as a lyrical note at the start of a Psalm. It is not an opportunity to give a mini-sermon, or describe the contextual background. The Scripture supports itself, or else it is amplified by the preacher.
Waiting briefly to allow people to find the passage.
